This franchise is a dying one. Most of the fans are white men in their 20s and 30s at the youngest and late 50s as the oldest. That demographic has a lot of choices for entertainment now, so as Disney keeps shitting on them, they just go find fun in other properties and movies besides star wars.
Disney killed interest in their brand in the one group of people where it mattered the most, while simultaneously, not built up enough interest in other demographics. This is why the Finn and Rose toys rot on the shelves; blacks and asians arent really that into star wars.

They needed to bring back the Emperor because the first and second films in the trilogy effectively discredited their villains as being actual threats. Phasma gets jobbed twice, effortlessly. Snoke gets spanked by the one person he KNEW was going to betray him. They've done everything they can to show that Kylo is an utterly worthless and whiny child. Lastly, The First Order is just a horde of faceless incompetents who inexplicably lucked into a comical succession of big ass scifi WMDs that are woefully misused or just totally ineffective despite how threatening the movies try to make them seem.

I wouldn't even shit on the plot of the prequels since it at least made an attempt to justify how all the Jedi and stuff got wiped out. Order 66 and some politics shit and the Republic wasn't perfect since the clone wars happened, it was pretty much like the real world where some factions are clashing. It's believable that the bad guys ended up winning one way or another... but not after the OT, since they wiped out the strongest bad guys who were causing most of the previous problems. The good guys (Republic) was now in total control so it's stupid that somehow the first order took them by surprise.

What always kills me is that the era of resistance is somehow after the end of the empire. To put it another way, the victors against the biggest threat in the whole story are now resisting against a smaller leftover force from the Empire they just defeated 2 decades ago.
Its a bit as if the French resistance happened after 45. It's just SO fucking absurd I can't get over it. I just can't.

In the Extended Universe novels, the era after the collapse of Sheev's empire was much more complex. There were Imperial admirals fighting each-other for legitimacy, former-imperials siding with the "New Republic", New Republic leaders becoming corrupt and attacking "good guys", etc. But it all got scrapped for this bullshit we have now.
If I were to write the lore for the Sequel trilogy, then First Order would be a fringe terrorist group that maybe controls some territory in the Unknown Regions and the Outer Rim, but not much else. The "Resistance" would be renamed "Leia's Militia" or something (since there's not really much to "resist" on the galactic scale). The First Order could still have galactic-scale threats like Starkiller Base, and whatever they're doing to revive Sheev now (maybe a weapon that allows a Sith Lord to drain the life force from planets like Darth Nihilus); but they wouldn't have the ships/numbers to literally conquer the galaxy by contemporary means.

Here's my logic to it, which is in no way a defense, because I'm inarguably a better writer than these hacks and can prove it with math (or my own damn script in a month).
The New Republic, or whatever it was supposed to be called, didn't recognize the First Order as a legitimate threat because they were operating primarily in fringe systems out of the way UNTIL they got a hold of Kylo and the Knights of Ren, and suddenly had a Sith level enforcement group to conduct advanced missions. Then they accelerated the construction of Starkiller base to hold a more credible threat to negotiate and consolidate powers with.
Leia was one of the few people who recognized that their presence was a bad thing and it wasn't just assholes running around being jerks to poor desert planets here and there, but no one took her side because trade and politics took a higher priority than hunting a terrorist cell. So she formed the Resistance as a means of "resisting against" the incursion of a second Imperial force in the Galaxy. They aren't rebelling. They really should have been called the "Peacekeepers" or something more on the nose to their agenda, which was stopping a bad group from getting worse.
But again, I thought about this concept before I wrote it down here. I did more work than they did.
