the problem with this film is it poses the solution to racism as almost a random event rather than a structural phenomenon. One very unrealistic thing about this movie is that it was approx. two (2) incidents that turned Derek into a racist. 1. His father teaching him racist ideas over dinner. 2. His father being murdered.
If Derek had gone to public school he would've been at least somewhat racist long before his father started to lecture him.

The rest fell flat and was like an over dramatic after school special trying to shoehorn in ridiculous scenes and events that instantly cause huge changes in their view for the sake of being convenient to the plot. Also, a lot of the dialogue and the entire soundtrack was melodramatic. I understand Lionsgate was far from accommodating in what they'd accept as a cut, but more takeaways from the gangs past operations, a more deep explanation on why Sweeney changed, or show some of the good memories of the kids' childhoods or a rough homelife of the young crip that kills Danny, would've made the ending even darker and enriched the plot and characters along the way.
