What they are looking for is to make video games a medium not linked to the world of children. They want them to be the same as going to see a movie in the sense that it is a mature art form that defines society. Kojima can do it. 37 years of directing don't go by in vain, with all the negatives we can find. The last trailer showed me that the guy knows where he's going. The rest is Japanese narrative methodology just like Miyazaki and certain Japanese novelists do. This way of exposing is done the same way as Japanese since long before.

I've played plenty of games, and I haven't seen a single one that matches the best writing in films or TV shows. Gaming is still an infant artform, and writing is still an afterthought.

Yes, they are different mediums entirely, but my point is valid right now because modern games are essentially written as films or TV shows. The gameplay and the story are compartmentalised into periods where you play and periods where there's a cutscene (or important piece of dialogue during a quiet moment) and the writers try and flex their skills.

One of the major problems with Kojima's current writing is that for years, he relied on codec calls for exposition, character work, narrative beats etc. There was no need for subtlety because he could just dump it all in a codec call.

Now he's trying to branch out and make more cinematic games like MGSV, but because he relied on the codec for so long, he has no idea how to write with subtlety in actual scenes with characters. There's no undercurrent to what's being said between two characters. There's no unspoken links in what they're saying.

Don't get me wrong, he has really good ideas and Psycho Mantis was one of them, but it's just his narration is atrocious. The flow is always unnatural when it's not cringeworthy.

The only good video games that came out this century is Mount & Blade and Haven & Hearth (which is a no-story mmo). Most "cinematic" video games are trash with derivative stories ripped off from films and tv shows that were made years or decades ago. Kojima is especially the worst, MGS series is utter tripe at all levels. That being said, television and film especially "mainstream", is entirely stagnant.
