The first half is meant to be a sort of "dark comedy" where you're experiencing schadenfreude; until the end of it, where Pyle kills Hartman and himself. That's really the transition into the second half - where you realize that all the suffering just causes more suffering. It's also all for basically no real purpose. Hence them singing the Mickey Mouse song at the end- because what the fuck were the Vietnamese really getting out of it, the ability to watch Disney shit? They'd basically become a "capitalist" subsidiary of the US, in the same vein as other shitholes being exploited to hell and back.

The point of the movie is paper-fucking-thin, but it's probably one of Kubrick's best works because of it. No 2deep4u bullshit, it's very on the nose and direct.

Zizek had it right: first half is the important introduction into the group of the army. The soldiers all learn how to fight and, more importantly, try to cope with being cogs in the machine.
Joker is a very good man at fitting in, even though at first glance he looks like a guy that still has his conscience.
We see at the end that HE was the one who was the most effective soldier, that managed to cope the best while still retaining his “true” identity inside. For him there was no terrible cost to becoming a soldier.
