elisabeth moss is kinda hot. What the fuck is this movie about anyway?

society
i'm serious

definitely looks like pretentious like a typical euro movie. At least the lives of others wasn't at all pretentious thank god. Just a wonderfully good film

Used to be my favourite film of all time. Researched it recently and I can't help but feel it was too black and white .
>Artist good
>State disgusting and bad
Still a masterpiece imo just not the perfect one I remember from 2006

maybe but I think it's a good look at east berlin before the wall came down. I mostly loved the historical setting of it, and how Wiesler was this silent guardian angel. Felt kinda anticlimactic somehow even though the ending was good and yeah a bit black and white because the only other 2 officials in the movie that were shown were corrupt. Still loved it

That's a decent flick

This and Persona are probably the most pretentious movies I have ever seen. They're existence is fully based on muh it's art because no one would see them otherwise.

Researching the historical accuracy is a good idea if you like The Lives of Others. It's basically fantasy. The DDR in the 1980s was nothing like that. Some elements are taken from the more radical 1950s, others are completely fictional.

It's a good movie though, but it shouldn't be confused for a historical movie.

>State disgusting and bad

Well, yeah? When the state is so paranoid and butthurt you have to actually hire people to keep full surveillance on all public people, you're not exactly good.

I think for me the Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie was the most pretentious film I have ever seen. I liked it but holy shit it's just got its dick in its own mouth whole time

where is this from? turkey? I have found a very hard time finding a turkism film
thanks for ruining it

same director. What did he mean by this?

Technically yugoslavia but in todays terms Bosnia and Herzegovina

Don't know why I thought it was turkey

I recommend the movies of Nuri Bilge Ceylan if you're interested in turkish cinema but be warned because they're really long with tons of dialogue.

Playing for the home team a bit, but these two are pretty good

A bit artsy, but still very enjoyable, probably my favorite hungarian movie

Satire about the hungarian communist system, it was banned at first

But Stasi peaked and was at their most autistic in the 1980's, and the archive where people could get their Stasi files after reunification is all real

For all of East Germany's faults, which are numerous, the way the German government is dealing with its legacy is pure revengism. In the 90s they actually held Erich Honecker, East Germany's General Secretary, in the same prison he was held for resisting the Nazis in the 40s.

Also, they tore down the East German parliamentary building (for asbestos, which is a valid enough reason, of course). But then they shipped the parts to fucking Saudi Arabia and built a neo feudal palace in its place.
