What’d you think of the first episode?
The Righteous Gemstones
i dunno, you tell me
I liked it.
i thought it was another live action Jem reboot.
if it's got Adam in it i'll watch it.
Why is Goodman even on the show? He had like three lines.
I didn't liked the length. It should be like viceprincipals not like succession. I don't know if it was because danny mcbride directed and wrote the pilot but to me it was a mess of tones. I was expecting full blown eastbound and down type of characters but they were pretty restrained, I don't like that because it makes you see how weak the plot is.
Agree on this too.
solid start. i'm curious to see how much goggins is in it.
hill/mcbride big dicking. this show obviously has a much higher budget than VP and probably eastbound too.
Great seeing Christfags get so btfo.
Meh
I was hesitant to watch, while I consider their other shows based classics, I got worrisome (((vibes))) from Gemstones trailers and marketing. I figured they'd toe the line, at least at first, and be "fair" to faith. But isn't the entire main cast Jewish? Goodman is, the daughter from VP definitely is. Levine? Mcbride?
It'd be 100x ballsier and funnier if this was a Jewish rabbi family in Israel, or one pretending to be Christian in the US. I liked the devil mask scenes, when they flirt with horror and gangster violence it works. I lol'd at the "statute on all fours" line. Thought Mcbride could have given a tougher, smarter edge to his character. The China pool intro was weak and confusing. Strange. Liked the arcade tattoo loser house guest. Liked the connection between Diablo villain the game and the Devil mask goon, hope they do more metaphysical mystical weird shit. Don't recall any of the music which surprises me.
Budget was welcome surprise. Show looks expensive af. Unfortunately the first ratings of only 500,000 are one third of Vice Principals which were pretty shockingly low by the end. Eastbound connected and I wonder if this can. The family angle has crossover promise
>Unfortunately the first ratings of only 500,000 are one third of Vice Principals which were pretty shockingly low by the end.
it feels like it's flying really under the radar, even here. people i know who loved eastbound/vp didn't even know it was coming out until i told them. did everyone just cancel their HBO subs after GOT ended?
Nah, HBO has become very odd with their comedies. They seem to intentionally aim for singles or doubles, rather than promote for big success. Eastbound was pretty well promoted, with Will Ferrell and good press coverage. Vice Principals seemed to be unfairly buried. The YouTube clips have like 10k views in 2019 and HBO hasn't put many if any on there. Even Ballers, you have the biggest action star on his third or fifth season now? It doesn't crack 1 million viewers? Wtf are u doing?
I was shocked when I saw the Gemstones budget on screen, it's depicting a lavish lifestyle and it's realistic and impressive. Lots of locations. The church looks like a real modern media complex church they rented out. I dunno, HBO seems to give Mcbride artistic freedom yet appear sorta embarrassed and awkward by what he makes. If Gemstones was on Netflix, Hulu, or FX/AMC, it'd reach a much bigger audience of fans and randoms. And I'm guessing they plan five seasons? A long Arc is definitely implied with the dad and hierarchy.
It's inevitable right that Jewish rabbis and Israel cross these charscters' path right? They won't chicken out?
I'm an antitheist, it's boring as shit.
Shit on Goodman and I'll glass you cunt
>And I'm guessing they plan five seasons?
is that so? i'm up for a short two seasons tops like VP did but idk if i'm game to watch five seasons of this.
It's not confirmed but Vice Prins was originally a feature they fattened up and split in two. Gemstones, naturally, seems designed where Goodman dies by S2 or S3, the cliffhanger, resulting in triple threat war as his heir to throne. It also has a thematic weight to go the distance, where their sins backfire with godly punishment and they're brought to their knees. I'm.expecting this to go dramatically darker and more violent than VP. Has lots of promise. And the budget, series don't get this budget unless they're designed to stick around and expand.
Literally does Yea Forums know of this show?? No threads.
There's been a few threads since the first episode released
Jody Hill isn't even involved with this one, pass
It was good. Will continue watching
i thought it was great plus it puts into the spotlight how ridiculous those mega church people are. they are literally laughing all the way to the bank while they build an empire off "faith"
>those digits
>this post
I kind of thought the same, it isn't so much a shot at Christianity as it is the mega church blasphemy. Some of it seemed to be picking fun at Jim Bakker types
Jody Hill plays Mcbride's best friend in this show dumbass. He's the guy with long hair who plays guitar and "wants to adopt"
>isn't so much a shot at Christianity
I dunno. Tbd. I get a little queasy when HBO shows use mocking imagery of crosses to be edgy, and I'm not religious just redpilled. Also making fun of evangelicals is fish in a barrel. It was edgy when Fletch 2, The Apostle, and My Blue Heaven did it.
What's it like? I enjoyed vice principals but I also don't want to waste my time watching some christian bashing "comedy" written by jews.
Like without even watching it I can assume that one of the Evangelists son's is secretly gay, his wife or daughter is getting BLACKED on the side and he doesn't actually believe in god and is just doing it to make money off of le dumb christians
It's good, you can feel Jody didn't write it but Danny is trying, the jokes are funny. And Danny is implying his brother is a fag, kek
The younger brther might be a fag. The daughter's with a blondie. The dad is a businessman but genuinely loved his wife so it's probably a "man of the faith gets greedy" rather than him being a fake all along. McBride has a hot redhead wife. It's not really pozzed yet.
> one of the Evangelists son's is secretly gay
I'd say it's about 60% yes. But son's friend isn't your typical fey bottom. He's got 666 tattooed on his chest, he's a manlet, a reformed metal head who knows about obscure Vidya, and possibly not even gay. They did this with Gamby in VP, where he's giving off vapors but just a dandy
>his wife or daughter is getting BLACKED
5% chance. The blacks in the show aren't attractive, they are cutthroat Kangz who work for the white family. Good characters, nice surprise. The entourage friends also seem to believe in God but are just flawed regular bros.
>he doesn't actually believe in god
No, he's disappointed his son wasn't reading the Bible for insight but to highlight funny words. It's implied they believe in the Bible, albeit in weird ways true to life, but yes greed is on display. It's not a con though, similar to Kenny Powers and baseball. And there's some weird coincidences that might imply the God angle won't be parodied but have a dark levity.
That's the first ep. Could change
I didn't even see black people in episode 1
I'll give it a go. Danny McBride has a pretty good track record
Yes, employees. They were silk African robes and shit lmao. Eat meals with them. Mcbride asks one for $1 million
Yeah nevermind, the one that joins them at Sunday lunch
Anyone watched On Becoming a God in Central FL? I figure if you like Gemstones or Vice Principals, good gauge if you've seen it.
the first episode is the only one that'll be that long. 30 minutes from here on out. Also it's obvious that Goodman is gonna have more lines. It was the first episode
