The new phase of Marvel is basically banking on the same strategy that Disney Star Wars used, that fan nostalgia and the power of the brand will be enough. The difference is that Disney was exploiting an entire generation of adults who grew up with the original star wars movies as kids, and were happy to get their children into the series as well. The MCU started barely a decade ago, the built-in audience isn't there yet.

Which is pretty funny given that 5 years ago, when Amazing Spider-Man 2 only pulled in 34 million and Sony and Marvel were first talking, Sony threw out an offer of 6 Billion to give back the film rights, but were willing to drop down to 3 Billion (or 2 Billion, but required sharing the rights), all of which being absolutely ridiculous offers.

That's actually the reason I think why Spiderman being such a big name by himself has his story so closely tied to Iron Man's in the MCU specifically so if this happened Disney can laugh at the writers trying to figure a way around a lawsuit doing two more movies glossing over the fact that Peter Parker's suit, motivation, and character arc is directly and intimately related to their biggest property besides Mickey mouse. Jokes on them though as Robert Downsy Jr. Loves money and isn't beholden to Marvel anymore so he can play as Spiderman's mentor if he wants as long as nobody calls him by his name and he doesn't actually wear the armor and with Far from Home's ending revealing Parker's identity it's an excuse for him to go into 'hiding' essentially cutting himself off from the MCU out of safety

The production/distribution companies (in this case Sony) only get ~50% of the domestic box office gross, the rest going to the theatres, and even less from foreign gross, so those numbers are not as rosy as you present them, even when they don't have to share with Disney.
