Don completely broke with Dick Whitman by going to Korea, hence the ease with which he stole another man's name, and for the first 3 seasons only acknowledged it through Anna, whose presence would turn him into a completely different person. Even when he visits California as Dick Whitman, he still tries to fuck Blake Lively's character despite her knowing his story; Dick Whitman isn't the "real him" either. When he moves on her he's trying to channel his immediate post-Korean War bachelor wanderings working on cars and fucking random women under a new identity, which she points out by bringing up his age. Not only do none of the women he fucks get to know the real him, the ones he doesn't fuck don't get to know him either, because he either treats them like a therapist or like a mother (this is his relationship with Joan), and Don didn't even know his mother and the closest thing he had to one is Abigail.

Even Don's relationships with other men don't expose the "real him", as most are taken in by the same presentation that took in Betty (Roger comments to Mona that the Drapers look like the couple on their wedding cake, a great deal of Pete's character arc revolves around him wanting to become Don); the only one who might see that Don is a fraud, but that it doesn't really matter because Don lacks any stable identity (and for the first three seasons, a written contact), and therefore Don Draper is as good as anything else, is the distant Burt.

Interesting take. I could see it. He lacks a lot social finesse but he is able to function at a high level. He is a hard worker, is able to put on a friendly face to clients and when it suits him, but often doesn't understand other peoples POV.
