You are somewhat wrong. Scottish Americans largely settled the south. Of course, they intermingled with the English as well, but the point still stands. In regards to your comments about the surnames - I refer you to the previous point about how they intermingled with the English and the fact that the majority of the Scottish settlers would have been Lowland Scots who are almost ethnically English anyway.
