When you drink you'll eventually trigger a mechanism where you cannot stop yourself drinking. It can be the first sip, or first few drinks, but once you reach that point your brain snaps and you physically cannot stop yourself drinking. It's pretty disgusting actually. I can have one glass of wine and it can trigger me to drink 4 or 5 bottles one after another, wandering teh streets at 4am looking for open bars, etc.

That's the problem really, withdrawal leads to cravings, but once you drink to get rid of the headaches/anxiety you can't stop drinking, and the wicked cycle repeats..

Also the more you drink the more tolerance you build. If you mainly drink alone as most alcoholics do, you don't actually realise how much you drink is abnormal. You meet friends and they look at you funny when you have a few shots with every pint... And when you drink twice as fast.. When they're drunk and tired but you're buzzed and barely drunk. It's shocking.
