I thought it was just how hard it was to date and how lonely she was. That trying to get a pet cat and failing and it probably dying in the beginning before she starts the relationship that also dies. She just doesn't try hard enough to make one work. Where with the strain of dealing with psychos changes how they see others. Wendy is used to dealing with psychos, doesn't change her, but her emotionally restraint that allows her to be good at that makes her fail at normal relationships.

Holden wouldn't have known he was wrong because he refused to look at other options despite other clues. Tench and Barney are willing to keep an open mind and look for other killers outside his profile but by the time they get enough clues to look for other killers and Holden is on board with it the shits shutdown.

I mean it's hinted early on with the black girl making a point to say some of the boys are prostitutes, it's stated by a cop that the KKK is likely killing a few boys just cause they could get away with it, there's the houses, boys knowing each other, etc. But Holden closes himself off to the idea of multiple killers early on and focuses on mind games through media that don't work.
