Burgess is a strange figure in literature, when he was good he bordered on being a genius, absolutely the real thing. When he couldn't be bothered he was fucking awful and lazy in ways that make you want to slap him (1985 is atrocious and he even says in the Forward he wrote it for money and didn't give a fuck).
