Hickeyposter here, I've deliberately held off on posting my boy because discussing Legasov and the others is just so much fun. It's good to have diversity in these threads.
The further I read into The Terror book, the more I'm convinced the show's writing is actually quite poor and it's carried by the acting and the setting themselves.
Every scene that's not taken verbatim from the book is either full of plotholes or doesn't make sense in the show's context (since the character's motivations are never explained as they were in the book).
I disagree entirely, Simmons himself said that he thinks show Hickey is better and overall kept praising the show. The only character I like more in the book is Goodsir.

I think the Inuit accounts are pretty reliable given they were proven right about the cannibalism even though the rescue team didn't want to believe them
I have the book that has all the Inuit testimonies and this account is conflicted, one said it was chains, some other Inuit stated it was a pocket watch on a chain that was around his head (kinda like resting on his ears) that ulimately froze to his face.
Also interesting, search parties found built cairns that did not contain any form of notes. It is to believed that they once did have brass cylinders with messages from the fatal Franklin expedition but most likely the Inuit took the cylinders for the worthy metal and (as in some accounts stated) gave the papers to their kids to play with.
Just imagine that the last survivors of starvation cove, that got the furthest, still managed to write their account but it was lost to the Inuit that did not care for literacy.

Please keep in mind that the inuits are an oral culture, their tales from the Terror expedition is basically folklore and mythologized by this point Such as the story of the three brits that showed up at a family igloo and were given three seals to save their life, but when the inuits checked on them in the morning they had eaten each other and left the seals alone. This is obviously a story that has roots in truth, but has been mythologized and been turned into a campfire story. Not saying the chain thing definitely didn't happen, though.

This creates characters that behave inexplicably, not because they are mysterious or insane, but because the writers forgot to flesh them out properly or fix contradictions when they altered the book's plot.

Unravelling the Franklin Mystery by David Woodman. I've read Frozen in time, its a short read and doesn't speculate as much as presenting the detailed excavation on Beechey Island.
I also recommend 'Finding Franklin' by Russell Alan Potter, way more detailed.
'Erebus: The story of a ship' by Monty Pythons Michael Palin i haven't read yet but he seems very emotionally invested in the whole story so I hope its a good book.
And if you want more about the artifacts then check out 'Sir John Franklin's Erebus and Terror Expedition: Lost and Found' by Gillian Hutchinson, its a picture book based on the Greenwich Maritime Museum exhibition of the Franklin expedition.
