But people with ASPD generally lack empathy, and Holden clearly has a great deal of empathy, so probably not that.

This one of the reasons why the death sentence doesn't work, even when you catch real killers. Just make a new punishment for serial killers and the like. Solitary with zero human contact and stimulus, only fed nutritious gruel to keep them alive. Let their brains rot while spending the least amount of money on them. If they actively stop eating to try and kill themselves then force-feed them to keep the punishment going as long as possible. Serial killers will never be fit to walk the streets again, and so the only purpose a sentence can have is to keep them away from regular people and to punish them.

He can empathize with the killers because he puts himself in their shoes, it's weird, but I consider it empathy.
