I loved Solaris, but does anyone REALLY think it’s better than pic related? Yeah the human element is there and Tarkovsky is great behind the camera but I just didn’t think it was “better” than 2001, and it certainly didn’t “fix” it.
I loved Solaris, but does anyone REALLY think it’s better than pic related...
And before some boomer attacks me for my opinion, I think they’re both solid 10/10 spacekinos, I just prefer Kubricks take on it
>Does anyone think Solaris is better than 2001
No.
You should also watch Soderberghs Solaris the music is incredible and it’s a commendable adaptation
I like it more than the original.
Solaris is Tarkovsky's weakest film, even he knows that.
I just find it funny he called 2001 shit when he basically took almost full influence from it and made an inferior (but still quality in its own right) movie
He thought it was cold i think. I don't remember him calling it shit. You have to remember that Tarkovsky liked very few films and he seemed to have very rigid ideas about what makes film good and bad. I still prefer him to Kubrick. Mirror, Andrei Rublev and Offret are something else.
They're both great in their own regard but they're really fundementally different. While tarkovsky does the tarkovsky thing of shooting you with hippie ass deep dialogue and exposition, kubrick uses minimal talking and focuses on silence and music.
The other difference is production value. 2001 barely shows it's age. The sets are fantastic, the props, everything. Solaris in comparison looks like a zero budget student film. They shot the highway scene in japan because there wasn't a soviet city that looked futuristic enough, for fucks sake.
*Ambience and music, sorry.
Interesting numbers
Solaris is my favorite Tarkovsky film, but yeah it's not as good as 2001
HALs death was more emotional than anything in Solaris if we’re being realistic here
2001 is not even close to Solaris.
You’re right, 2001 is leagues ahead in quality
dude seems joyless and hopelessly up his own ass from reading these
2001 is the greatest film ever made.
The sentence made perfect sense even with the typo.
I know but there's a difference between silence and ambience.
Other directors use complete silence at times for impact but kubrick usually depends heavily on ambient sounds, like, shit, in most of 2001, you just hear mechanical sounds, buttons being pushed, motors, footsteps, they play their role to making up the atmosphere he wants.
I agree it’s up there
See Tarkovsky said 2001 was cold, but wasn't that always the intention. The future of 2001 is technologically breathtaking, but souless. Man travels into space, but litters it with consumerism.
It absolutely is the intention for SOME of it. A giant blank slate monolith is urging humanity along evolutionarily.
But if someone doesn’t see the Dawn of Man and Jupiter Mission with HAL as having soul then idk, it might be lost on the viewer.
Tarkovsky had ample emotion sure but it was more fairy tale than science fiction
No sci-fi film is better than 2001.
They are both kino, but Solaris is more of a borefest so 2001 wins.
superior space kino coming through
Is it Cillian Murphy-kino? I never saw it
Definitely worth a watch, even if for the audio and visuals alone
