In the unproduced episode "The Trial" it's revealed the tallest and zim are the same age and they were at the academy together. They didn't hate him but found him annoying. Zim in that episode killed both previous Tallest that ruled separate,in one day killed the female tallest and when she got replace by another one he also got killed in the same day. All by Zim,the tallest became leaders because of him so that might be why they didn't kill him.

I don't think it was too off base, and I rewatched the series the week the movie came out. It just fits more with the comics than the original show, but I like both so it wasn't a problem.

I had a hearty chuckle seeing the sharks holding hands with the kids for the song after Membrane's outburst at the start of the movie

also it's actually really interesting to see that Dib SHOULD be dedicating himself to science instead of the paranormal; his obsession is getting him nowhere and he can't reliably act on any of the information that he uncovered, whereas Membrane seems fully capable of thwarting any Irken plan with the knowledge he's accrued, and this is with him believing none of it exists.
If Dib actually tried to learn something from his dad, he could defeat Zim with no issues whatsoever

Not only is Zim stupid, but all of humanity is also stupid. The two exceptions are Dib & Gaz. Dib sees zim as a threat whereas Gaz knows Zim is an alien but a non threat because his plans always end up backfiring.
