Westerns

Finally saw pic related and I'm probably going to watch Stagecoach tomorrow. This was actually super good. Growing up I only watched Clint Eastwood westerns so in my mind John Wayne was always a superhero type cowboy who could do no wrong but I guess this movie proved otherwise. What are other westerns starring John Wayne worth checking out? How does Stagecoach compare to The Searchers?

Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Rio Grande

Google says this is the "Cavalry Trilogy" Is it in the same vein as the Dollars trilogy where he could be playing the same character or is it all separate?

separate, but they're tied together by the same theme of being centered on the cavalry out west and they all star john wayne and are directed by ford.

Watch my darling clementine

Nice it seems like a big deal if they call it a trilogy. I'll have to check them out after Stagecoach for sure.

You know I was literally going to ask about that because it's also directed by John Ford but I wanted to stay on the topic of John Wayne movies. I guess I have a back log cut out for me at least.

Django (1960’s)
The Great Silence (1960s)

There are some good Italian westerns besides the dollar trilogy.

I haven't heard of The Great Silence so I'll go in blind. But I have heard the Italian version of Django is different than the American version in some ways?

All the Fords.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. It also stars based Jimmy Stewart

Rio Bravo/El Dorado

Forgot all the Hawks and The Big Trail.

Big ass backlog but that makes me super happy. I always considered myself a fan of westerns but I guess it's more accurate to say I liked westerns with Clint Eastwood in them.

I second "The Big Trail". It's an underrated Wayne flick.

When I looked it up apparently its the first movie where he's billed as the star? That's worth checking out on its own if anything.

Rio Bravo is western kino. It's worth watching it, especially for the singing scene.

I tried to watch Rio Bravo yesterday and it was fucking horrible, no good acting, no good dialogue, no good music, no good camera work, it was so fucking plain, so boring
Today I saw five man army wich is an spagetti western and it was much better, at least it was entertainment and the train sequence was tense

Stagecoach was great but Searchers was better

Liberty Valance and Rio Bravo but I'd suggest you also watch...

McCabe & Miss Miller
My Darling Clementine

I rewatched the Dollars trilogy this week since I watched them when I was a kid with my dad. I always thought The Good, The Bad and The Ugly was the best, however, although it was still good, I enjoyed For a Few Dollars More a lot more. I also finished reading Blood Meridian yesterday which is slightly unrelated but is was fantastic, Judge Holden's character was unbelievably well written.

Big Jake was pretty good.

Stagecoach is excellent though it's not quite the masterpiece that The Searchers is, it's still a damn fine film that rightly shot Wayne to stardom. If you liked seeing Wanye in a darker and more flawed role you need to check out Red River, that one's brilliant, only saw it recently but it blew me away. If you want a lighter and more humourous Wayne try True Grit and Rio Bravo.

Other Anons have mentioned The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and I must echo this, definitely one of his best next to the The Searchers, and if you want more Stewart DEFINITELY watch Winchester 73, it's not considered the best of the traditional westerns but it's my personal favourite.

Watch Jeremiah Johnson

I finished Blood Meridian a couple months ago and have started re-reading it already. I've never been so haunted by a book in all my life.

Blessed post.

the ending to red river still pisses me off. even hawks hated it.

unrelated but Watch The Great Silence

It didn't ruin the film for me but it did bring it down. Shadow of a Doubt had me the exact same way, such a sudden and forced resolution. Still love both.
