maybe if you dont have a county mental ward and have insurance. I've never been charged for involuntary commitments. but I've never called this hotline either.

yes I've heard that even suggesting the idea of public healthcare supposedly makes you a commie, but the logical leap necessary for that is simply unbelievable. where I'm from, unless you go for some specialized treatments, you don't pay anything, and if you get a prescriptions most medicines are either for free or discounted

I imagine they report you to the police if you sound serious about killing yourself, it's illegal to kill yourself in the U.S. because you're a piece of property and the government want's you alive so they can exploit you for 70 years till you croak.

the VA, which is the administration that handles government-provided healthcare to veterans is notoriously awful, because now that they're too old to fight the government views them as worthless and spares no expense to deny them the benefits they were promised when they signed their lives away. A government health plan that every citizen was on would be under much greater scrutiny and held to much higher standards than one that only serves veterans, however I could see it still being worse than comparable systems in other countries simply because of the sheer degree of corruption that exists in the current system, but even that would probably be better than what we have now.

After a long bout of depression a few years ago I ended up calling the line probably 20 times over the course of a couple months. Mostly they will just try to determine if you're going to hurt yourself right now and if it seems like you are they will send police to come take you away.

If it's not and it's clear you just need someone to talk to, they usually ask what is bothering you and listen and then they give you generic stuff like "mindfulness techniques". Essentially just taking deep breaths. This can help when a girl is telling you to do it in the moment but otherwise isn't very useful. The one thing I remember being surprised by is that they can't promise anything, they can't say things will get better, they really do just listen and offer the most milquetoast little techniques. It reminds me, in retrospect, of talking to a chatbot when you're depressed and lonely. You so desperately want to provoke some humanity and warmth out of it but there's nothing really there. The people you're calling are trained not to truly connect. The fact people shill this number to virtue signal instead of just talking and trying to help themselves is really disgusting if you have any experience with the line.

It's not terrible, but it's certainly not good. It can help when you're on the absolute brink but before that it's just going to slowly increase the feeling of despair and loneliness.
