You familiar with Monastic Holy Orders? Knights Templar, Knights Hospitaller, etc?
One of them was German in origin and called the Teutonic Order. They converted the Baltic Pagans at swordpoint and ended up carving up a nice chunk of actual territory for themselves.
Eventually, I don't remember the exact circumstances, the Hochmeister of the Teutonic Order inherited the Duchy of Brandenburg. A Holy Order with land and their military tradition became a monarchy, Prussia. This new state was often said to not be a state with an army, but an army with a state. They pioneered marching and drill, and had some of the most disciplined soldiers in Europe.
They would be the state that would eventually confederate most of the other small German states in the Holy Roman Empire and eventually form Germany.
That's why even today the Iron Cross, a symbol of a Monastic Holy Order, is still used by the German Military.

Germany used to be the Holy Roman Empire which was a collection of mostly independent states with a lot of silly rules. One of the rules is you were not allowed to make yourself a king, so Brandenburg took some land to the east that wasn't part of the HRE and the ruler declared himself King in Prussia to get around that rule. Prussia went on to unify Germany and started two world wars, the second of which ended with the allies agreeing to make the concept of Prussia illegal.

Other way around, the von Hohenzollern ruler in Brandenburg inherited the Duchy of Prussia after his cousin died without any heirs. This was able to happen thanks to the protestant reformation, since retaining the rule of a catholic holy order wouldn't have made much sense for a bunch of Lutherans, and so you get the secular Duchy of Prussia, by the time the kingdom was formed, the order hadn't operated as militant arm of the church for a while. The grand-master at the time of conversion was a von Hohenzollern, and so you get the set up for the inheritance thing later. The reason Prussia was used was because Brandenburg was an electorate in the empire,and since the emperor was technically king of the Germans, you weren't allowed to call yourself king of an imperial territory.
