As to why they are white men, well, people don't consider the problems of white men since they're always assumed to have it better than anyone else, and they're always seen as the punching bag of society and by the media. I also think the societal revolution we've gone through recently has had some negative effects that people just don't want to bring up for fear of being called sexist.
