The problem with the human stuff from 2014 was that the leads of military man and his wife were completely flat and lacking in charisma while the most compelling character gets killed off before they even say Godzilla's name. The human drama in KOTM gets stupid as hell, but at least they have human emotions and Serizawa, the other interesting character from 2014, actually has more to do.

She's actually a direct reference to the magical twins that always accompany Mothra- hence her photo album showing all the twins in her family, right as she's talking about how her village worshiped Mothra.
That aside, I loved the movie. I was really surprised at how damned good the music was. The entire Rodan fight was killer.
