All the history within the book is sound and extensively cited. It's not meant to be an academic account and says as much from the first page. It's a 1000 page book you are judging based off on section of one chapter. You should actually read it.

The appeal of Rise and Fall is it's readability, it is the Hardcore History of books. Richard J Evans is one of the many historians who have condemned the work (while admitting that it is very accessible).
