The implicatiom is that he didn't deserve to be king, because he was selfish and shortsighted, on top of being a murdering scumbag. By anyone's measure, he would make a bad ruler (well, maybe not to femenists, but to any sane person)
I haven't seen the remake, so IDK if it's as obvious as it was in the original. But that's the gist, anyway.

It didn't work very well. Constant wars over issues that didn't affect the populace (the most recent and the most prominent example being WWI), rulers being incompetent and not working in the interests of the people, a lack of guaranteed freedoms, the inability of monarchy to evolve and improve on its own, huge sums of money wasted on the crown at great cost and little benefit to the people, the oppression of feudalism on the people, etc. Democracy isn't perfect, but it's better than monarchy.
