Godzilla 2014 had some novel marketing which sorta projected Godzilla as a sort of unstoppable natural disaster/spectace.

KotM simply promised Big Ole monsters bonkin' one another.

2014 tried to expand the audience, KotM sold itself to the hardcore fans. Problem is, you need a wider net than hardcore fans to make movies you are going to spend more than $200 million producing/marketing.

Enough negativity. Let's hear about what they did right and you liked.

The classic monsters were well represented. A few of the fight scenes were pretty effective, the scenes of city destruction were competently done.

Unfortunately this makes up about 15 minutes of the movie, tops.

MCU had a meteoric rise(?) and is the biggest contemporary series. Kaiju and particularly Godzilla is more of a distance runner with dedicated audience that's slowly growing over time. You don't get to be the longest running franchise in history without making a few things right. I've never seen more newcomers to the series curious about it and asking for recommendations. There is a room to grow provided they choose a decent release date and deliver what they promised.

Oh and the Serizawa/Godzilla scene was a (the only) cool human moment in the film.
And now he is dead, replaced by Legendary's Chink Agenda.

The classic themes remixes, the monsters' personalities, the Rodan chase, Mothra's 'birth' in the waterfall, Mothra showing up to revive Godzilla, Godzilla's 'revival', Left licking the ice, Serizawa's goodbye, the twins revelation.

KotM would have performed much worse if it kept doing the same thing as 2014. When this movie came out, I was so disgusted by it I considered the monsterverse dead until SKI blew my expectations away.

The portrayal of the monsters is great, some visuals are fantastic, same for the music and even if the movie doesn't manage to sell the human plotlines, the characters themselves are kinda endearing for the most part. This movie is just less than the sum of its parts.

He's right though. There's almost no real sense of interaction with the humans in KotM, whereas the monsters are a real, tangible threat to the humans in Skull Island.
The monster scenes in KotM all look like Omnimax projections behind the people. The scene with Ghidorah going all Jurassic Park on thee tiny Osprey is totally stupid. Godzilla standing on the ocean (really his whole thing with the Dad in its entirety). And my favorite, their searching the rubble for the daughter with Ghidorah and Godzilla fighting right above them. If not for the (obnoxious) sound-mixing, you wouldn't even know they Kaiju were above them. The action scenes in Skull Island are indisputably better, KotM just has nostalgia going for it.

Well, the monsters. Everything about them from design to effects to character was superb.

Well, even though Godzilla has shrugged off everything the Navy and Air force could throw at him, they thought this even larger monster would be super-vulnerable/frightened of small arms fire.

Or alternately, every human in the movie was obligated to act nonsensically retarded.

They were stellar CGI effects by 2006 standards, no doubt.

You know, it's better we didn't. I found the references to older movies delightful, but they were simply overwhelming in the end and chipped away from any truly original and memorable scenes the movie could offer.

The entire purpose of the bomb was to juice him up. Whatever damage the bomb did, he likely regenerated due to the massive amounts of atomic energy he was absorbing.

He got his ass kicked and energy drained and he still managed to go critical, I imagine right after the bomb went off he was fresh as paint and could heal any wound.

the main reason kong skull island was so good is because it had a way better ccondensed cast of actors so the human parts were actually entertaining.
