Germany was in dire need of oil, which the USSR had plenty of. Hitler also (correctly) suspected that the USSR was planning to eventually attack Germany and again, correctly, surmised that the sooner he attacked, the better his chances were.

He knew that once they'd lost the Battle of Britain, this war was going to drag on and Germany would inevitably lose a war of attrition, simply because they lacked the resources, and possibly get invaded by the Russians in the meantime.

They wanted complete control over Europe and for the entire world to become communist, conflict with anyone that opposed that was inevitable.

Yes. Von Bock could have taken Moscow in August but Hitler ordered him to turn around and help the infantry in destroying the encircled Soviet armies. Of course its impossible to know what would have happened if von Bock had taken Moscow, whether he would be able to hold it, whether that would result in a Soviet capitulation. I wonder how possible it would have been for him to form a long term truce with the USSR rather than attacking it all. On one hand, Stalin was a socialism-in-one-country kind of guy. On the other hand, a Nazi Europe would have been in shambles and would be easy to conquer for a rested USSR. On the third hand, defeating a Europe united under one flag, even though it just came out of a war, would have been a risky bet, especially with the US still at its full strength.

It's well documented that the Nazis spent their first few years persecuting socialists and communists. 'Socialists' being in their name was largely irrelevant to their actual goals.
