Because the news about them trickles out over a period of years. Often the individual murders aren’t actually linked until after the killer is caught. By then most of the actual homicides are years or decades old. So there isn’t much media interest. The Zodiac reign of terror is the exception not the rule. Look at the Golden State Killer for a recent example.

They found out the site he used to make it, got logs from the company of who accessed that part of the map in the two weeks before the murder. They had his IP address pretty quick after that.
Serial killers were ahead of the curve in the 60s and 70s. Police have since caught up. Even if you get away, you leave one pubic hair and they can track you down using DNA databases.

Mindhunter is a series about how the FBI developed procedures for catching serial killers. Those procedures have evolved over time and now LEAs are much more adept and identifying and catching them. They don't make the news because the news knows not to report on them and feed their egos. Also, without a feed to their egos, there's no point in being a serial killer anymore since they no longer get recognition for their crimes.

Yes. A mass shooter just knows they're going away anyway, so they do all their killings at once. It then becomes a national, sometimes even global headline, giving the killer media recognition and feeding their egos. Other equally sick people then mimic the crime to get their own share of recognition. This time period is comparable to the '70s in terms of societal distress and disorder, so it goes to reason we'd be producing a lot of sick motherfuckers as a result.

Even when the media reports that kind of thing, people aren’t really engaged and just forget about it relatively fast.

Some people want tighter gun control or outright bans, and whether or not such a thing would be effective is debatable, but the reality is that an outright weapons ban in the United States in the year 2019 is not practical at this moment in time. Even if it was guaranteed to solve every problem, a constitutional amendment is not going to happen on such a divisive issue in such a divided political zeitgeist. Hoping to amend the goddamn bill of rights is about as realistic as hoping for Superman to stop the mass shooting. In the meantime the discussion should be about things the country can do right now to solve the problem.
