Eh I don't know about that. The similarities with sailor Moon end at magical girls, and really Steven universe takes it in such a drastically different direction it might as well not even be comparable.
And the first episode of SU came out less than a year after the first chapter of Land of the Lusterous, which wasn't even localized for American audiences yet, so I have a hard time believing the gem thing is anything more than coincidence
