I'll be contrarian. I think Rian's movies are well-shot and have a decent amount of verve to them. Star Wars felt stilted, as though he was uncomfortable with the material but it was still better than most recent blockbusters. If he's given breathing room simply to play around in the land of Star Wars, without needing be tied down by the Skywalker/JedivsSith saga, I think he could make a reasonably enjoyable movie.

I know for certain they pick themes and ideas and then create a story structure around it, giving them just enough boundaries to improvise creative writing which they then edit for elegance and accuracy. Disney Star Wars failed because they simply picked the wrong time to do the deal they did and execute the plans they made for going forward. They changed too much, too fast and in an environment where the target audience was not looking toward entertainment to reinforce "this aint your dad's Star Wars".

They misread the post counter-culture era of the late 60's and early 70s, where a lot of the entertainment landscape radically changed. Very few of that were shows or films from the 50's and early 60's that "pivoted" to boomer ideals and aesthetics. They just canceled shit en masse ("The Rural Purge") and then abruptly introduced new shit. They tried having both by doing a slow change like it was the roll-out of something new (hence, episode VI being a reboot) and failed.

It's a funny quip, but Rian Johnson was not just 'some guy'. He was a fairly well respected young-ish sci-fi director after Brick and Looper. If the rumors are true and Lucas retains some stake in his Star Wars, thus prompting Disney to aggressively deviate, they would have been strongly inclined _not_ to bring-on someone who had proven that they "understood Star Wars". They'ld go looking for someone who could be trusted to "do something different". They simply failed to anticipate how much supervision was necessary to prevent the whole thing from going off the rails with politics and "subversion". These days, "be different" can be a euphemism for "be insincere".
