This. Homelander's arguments check out physically speaking and he couldn't save the plane. At that point what is he supposed to do? Save a couple of people? First off, he still has to take Maeve, and secondly, how do you pick who lives and who dies in this situation? You take the little girl on account of her being a cute little girl and leave everyone else to die? How do you even justify making a choice like that?
If superheroes existed in real life they should be sent into missions with a support team of trained specialists to help navigate and administer aid in situations like this one. Those people were honestly fucked anyway. At least Homelander made an attempt to save them, without him they wouldn't have gotten even that.
