The novel was as much about companionship as it was about eldritch horror, and it starts with a cast of seven kids who only barely know each other, and their primary connection is that they were all severely rejected throughout life for their various unique traits. The bulk of the 1000+ pages is spent building up these bonds, and the sex scene is the culmination of it. The point is that they've completely accepted one another for who they are and fully connected, which is important since each one was alone at the start. The point isn't sex for pleasure or eroticism, but showing how they completely overcame their personal demons by the time it came to fight IT.
