Hong Kong is basically an outcropping of the West off the coast of mainland China.
because the British had possession of it for 99 years, they essentially became westernized. while mainland became centrally planned, they went full free market. they actually have rule of law there, and most speak English fluently, in addition to Cantonese.
China finally had this highly prosperous, westernized city, handed over to it in 1997.
the contradiction was wallpapered over then with the concept of "one country, two systems," but as we can see, that illusion is breaking down fast.
the recent conflict was over an extradition bill that would have allowed Beijing to snatch anyone into their opaque judicial system from Hong Kong.
