Genuine question but do pilots not get issued parachutes? So theoretically if a plane is going down the crew could be assholes and jump ship to save themselves? And regardless of whether their motives are panicked self-preservation or a concern for the passengers, if they manage to successfully pull off an emergency landing their actions saved other lives. Their act is that of heroism.

Modern commercial passenger planes travel at altitudes that are too high for parachuting without a portable oxygen supply, and at speeds that would fuck you up if you jumped from them.

The planes people jump out of generally only go to about 10,000 feet and are pretty slow.
