Australian cinema is either shlocky horror or comedies about a battler and his dysfunctional family that critics fawn over and say things like "it has a lot of heart".

I dunno, I've watched Walkabout, Picnic at Hanging Rock, and Wake in Fright so far, and those are nothing like you've described.

maybe australian new wave is different from today's films though, I wouldn't know.

So that's what, like only a dozen films in the history of Australian cinema that are good? Meanwhile you fucking Aussies flood Yea Forums by the thousands talking shit about US film and television.
