So I'm trying to read the comic and I am having a hard time enjoying it. I just finished the part where they solve the mystery of the faggot murder and tek knight has a coma dream about fucking an asteroid until it explodes. The artstyle is godawful, the dialogue is tim buckley tier, and the thing is taking forever to get into anything remotely interesting. Should I bother pressing on?

I think it was that, but you have to look at it from the angle of psychopathy. Homelander respects Butcher as an equal at that point because he's the first being he's ever interacted with that treats him like a person. Every other person is scared shitless of him, even other supers... except for this one guy that he met randomly a few years before. Homelander even smiles when he finally put it all together and remembered who Butcher was.

Butcher was interesting to him and he seemed to know that they didn't need to be adversaries. The cucking was the quickest way to deflect anger from homelander to the cheating skank wife and get to the point where the two men could have a real conversation. Butcher was simply to special to kill unlike all the other mud people.

Homelander has a twisted respect for Butcher. He is the only person he has ever met that wasn't afraid of him, and he is also a ruthless sociopath and manipulator like himself. He kept him alive not only to fuck with him but also to use him and The Boys as pawns in his plan of taking over Vought and then the US government. He will make sure Butcher keeps his hatred for him then turn him loose with the expectation that he will keep gunning for him and other supes. He may even turn him into a public Supervillian (even without compound V boost he could be a Lex Luthor type) where he and The Boys will be tricked into gathering a league of “supervillians” to oppose him. That way the demand for Vought heroes is kept high and it puts more pressure on the government to bend to their whims.
