My biggest problem with the plot was that there were too many named characters who were just generic milfags or scientists there to pad the length of the movie. I think the whole Russel family plot was thrown in there to try to keep the movie more relatable.

No, for this one to work, they'd have to change the writing and the execution completely. It's much less a problem of format than the people in charge being absolutely incompetent at telling a story in a compelling and interesting manner.

The 2014 movie is almost unwatchable in my opinion. It's extremely boring, and tries to mimmick Jaws while ripping off the cringey kid watching TV scene from Jurassic Park III. Godzilla also looks stupid. Gareth Edwards tried to turn him into the T-Rex from Jurassic Park, as you can see from pic related. The movie also doesn't use any cues that would make him recognizable as Godzilla, such as his classic roar or theme music. The plot has the veneer of realism, but is actually still pretty absurd. The main character isn't likable, and shows almost no emotion or motivation. The humans have almost no impact on what the monsters are doing. The two villainous monsters have hideous designs, and don't seem like they should be threatening to Godzilla.

This sounds like the same problem the 1998 and 2014 movies had where the writers/directors either had never seen a Godzilla movie before or were clearly embarrassed of the source material so much that they just decided to ape American movies under the Godzilla brand while trying to keep it close enough to the "Godzilla" they know from cultural osmosis. I actually like some of what the anime did where they had one race that worshipped Mothra, one race that worshipped Ghidorah, and the other one that more or less worshipped Mechagodzilla. This idea could have been taken in a better direction than the way they went.

The movie didn't have to be great, all it had to do was get one thing right, and that's the feel of the monsters. The rest could have been shit but they had to nail the monsters. But they messed it up. The monsters were too fast, too little feel of their mass and power. It felt cartoony and overall just off. They did the same mistake we saw in Pacific Rim 2. Having more robots and monsters doesn't do shit for our monster movies if they don't feel right with their weight and mass and movement.

I'm also a huge Godzilla fan since I was little and only got to see KotM a couple days ago and I was really disappointed. I didn't ask for much, just some satisfying monster action and some awesome Godzilla moments but the film completely missed that imo. I'm not saying it's shit, but I was very disappointed and in hindsight I'm glad I didn't pay to see it at the theater.

Obviously, this isn't canon to the movie, but it's a reference to King Ghidorah's origins in the Showa series. The planned sequel to Godzilla vs King Ghidorah was going to be "King Ghidorah's Counterattack" where the 'real' King Ghidorah from outer space comes to earth to fight Godzilla, but Toho decided that using the same villain again wouldn't put butts in seats. They went with Mothra since she's the most popular kaiju among women, and the Japanese population skewed female at the time.

That being said don't listen to the contrarians on Yea Forums who suddenly love 2014 and think this is shit. All the negative things they can say are completely subjective. It's not perfect, but it's a damn good Godzilla movie, and probably the best we can hope from a western adaptation. It was faithful and filled with soul. It has it's problems, like I said. Rodan's characterization, Rodan and Mothra being made small to cement them as sidekicks to Godzilla. Rodan is the shortest ever, even smaller than the 50 meter 1957 Rodan, even if he has the biggest wingspan and weight ever. Rodan should stay Godzilla's height as he is his equal. Plus Rodan's characterization of being a henchman was a bit annoying. Not to mention the Oxygen destroyer out of left field. Maybe they were alluding to it in the Senate meeting where the military was talking big shit saying killing the Titans was an option. That and they have MASER weaponry like in the good old movies. At the end of the day, the human characters are what you'd expect from a Godzilla movie, for the most part, besides the two intentionally annoying characters. The soundtrack is 10/10, the fights are great but not so often or plentiful you get bored of it, the plot and pacing was good, no real plot holes, it answers every question you could have. Overall it's probably in the top 10 Godzilla movies, and certainly #1 for a Western adaptation.

Anyone else really disliked the look of Goji's atomic breath? Especially when he used it at the end against Ghidora it looked completely 2D without any textures. Just a giant solid blue flameshaped energy blast. It looked like from a video game or cheap plugin effect or filter.

Not really, other Godzilla movies had actually entertaining human plots. Take Invasion Of Astro Monster for example, the human scenes have a comfy Star Trek TOS feel and are overall very fun. KOTM and 2014's human plots are just really fucking boring

It's not bad, but it's not very good either. As far as Godzilla movies go it's decent, but I'm not sure I'd even put it in my top 5 -- and I'm more than a little critical of most of Toho's Goji movies too.

I think most of the more acute butthurt is just the fallout of expectations being so high.
