On one hand I guess it's saving the movie from a bunch of retarded lefties and negative press who know nothing about GI Joe and would think a ninja can only be an Asian guy, like they did with Iron Fist. On the other hand I don't see how this would work with his backstory. They've already shown him as a white kid in the first movie but it also doesn't support the fish out of water element that Snake had training in the Arashikage and making Storm Shadow jealous when he became the best through hard work and dedication.
