Wasn't the last one a flop? Did they just greenlight a sequel to it before it even released?

The contract needed them to make all the 3 Goji films until 2020. So yeah they started filming the sequel before KOTM even hit theaters. Godzilla vs Kong is releasing in fucking march next year, that's only a couple of months from now.

Not a complete and total failure as it made back it's production budget (not accounting for marketing), but Toho really liked what they did with the rights (to the point they're extending the partnership) and you gotta remember that first phases never pull in the billions, they're all about establishing the brand.
Still, less than 400 mil is a pretty bad desu, wished it at least made 500 mil.

Hopefully vs Kong manages to pull more people in, it's the "avengers" of the franchise.
