And instead of being freed from their imprisonment they arguably find themselves in even deeper shit because it turns out there's huge world outside of the island that's trying to murder the fuck out of them because fossil fuels lmao.

The fact that it's just humans being cruel as fuck on both sides fits in perfectly with the whole despair theme the story's had going since the very beginning
