This post is built around the premise that Discovery is something unique, something that deserves to continue and should be supported. It isn't unique. It's your typical NBC/ABC/CBS network schlock drama with a Star Trek decal slapped onto it.

It's the most bland, milquetoast excuse for science fiction I've ever seen. You can feel the disdain for the source material in every line that's written. Are some people too mad about it? Probably -- they should just ignore it. But that doesn't mean that it should be defended, or lauded as anything more than it is: a pile of uninspired shit squeezed down the feeding tube to be consumed by lowest common denominator mouth-breathers.

The Mass Effect style would've worked better in a post-VOY setting. It feels a little weird in the timeline. Yeah, I get it, obviously they couldn't make everything out of plastic nobs and flashing lights like TOS but that's exactly the reason that you should never make anything during the TOS timeline. It's not the cast, it's the series. Just there's no a logo for all Kirk movies, or all Picard movies or all reboot movies so I had to improvise. The DSC cast is its biggest flaw, right before it's general writing.

Okay. Even then, putting it as equal to those other two seems a bit too charitable, to be honest. TAS has some good episodes.

Only a few, but the characters and whimsy save it. ENT has better characters than DSC (which really isn't saying much) and it has better episodes but there's so many boring episodes of ENT compared to DSC's percentage-wise. They all come out to about equal.

The show doesn't practice what Star Trek preaches, and it wasted so much money that could have gone towards better things. Like something with decent writers, and a decent director.

It has a couple good episodes, and the cast had good potential, but that doesn't make up for everything else.

I doubt any of them will reach anywhere near DS9 levels of quality (modern pacing and storytelling I don't see being fixed anytime soon), but the only one I'm afraid of being downright bad is Lower Decks since comedy is very subjective (and the art style is god awful). Starfleet Academy really doesn't interest me so if they go through with it and fully announce it, they'll REALLY need something interesting to draw me in because right now it sounds like a college soap opera.

It really depends if everyone remembers that it's Star Trek and not some generic teen drama in spess. They could even be creative and rotate between Starfleet and some PoV episodes for the Klinks.

Keep in mind that Kurtzman said he's hiring the women who wrote 'Gossip Girls' for Starfleet Academy.

The game had the main plot be about a conspiracy from I guess what ENT would call Terra Prime. Having things like that, with the cadets slowly uncovering political macinations in a way that introduces the viewers to the world of Star Trek one piece at a time, could work not only work to give it spice over your standard teen drama, but to introduce new people into the setting gradually, like Harry Potter.
Even those people could direct better then him, so I'm not entirely without hope yet. Just please, please make sure that they watch the game's FMV first as a foundation for what they're doing.

It's not that, imo, it's more the way lines are delivered. No one acts like a grown up doing a job, they either act like excited idiots or dour and melodramatic. It's hard to explain, but it feels so unnatural. I can't even tell if it's the actor's or the director's fault, but combine that with a camera that whips about like crazy and the existence of Ash Tyler and I couldn't get beyond episode four.

It improves after episode 4 but it's still one of the weakest Treks. Ash Tyler ends up being one of the best characters in the show by the second season even if I hated him in the first. The camera is fucking awful. It's only decent when Frakes is directing. Improves in season 2 a bit.

If you only saw 4 episodes you missed many great lines with WONDERFUL writing.

This. That type of technology already exists in certain high end vehicles, they use multiple cameras and sonar and stitch things together with the computer that generates a "top down" view using all the inputs.
I'm sure 24th century Starfleet wonder-tech can easily recreate a similar view.
Hell, all they'd need is a sensor pack with a camera on a pole that slides out from the nacelle and you have an image without even needing a computer. If you're building a huge starship it couldn't be that hard to do, and I'm sure you could come up with decent reasons to do it, damage control, docking, security from boarders, emergency sensors etc.

Sort of a fun character that's never made me cringe in a way that didn't make me genuinely laugh and has stories and dialogue that's been exciting without being edgy. Same old 'willing to do whatever needs to be done' type dude as the others Spocks which is nice. Spock, Ash Tyler (post season 1), Mudd and Lorca are the only characters I've REALLY enjoyed in Discovery

Here's some refreshing ideas that'd help revitalize the franchise.
>Risa show. Focuses on a private detective. Political conspiracies here as well as the lives of people who work there. A DS9-esque semi-stationary ensemble type show.
>Mirror universe series. A sort of TNG-type show taking place on an Imperial ship after a successful slave revolt helped rebuild the Terran Empire. This would feature completely new crews, not just 'mirror counterparts' of what we've already seen. Might have some cameos by the ISS-Titan with Captain Riker or something. By season 3, the emperor opens a wormhole to the prime universe so they can invade the Federation to unite the two entities. The war doesn't go quite as planned as the ships encounter their alternative counterparts and learn from each other, ending in the empire becoming much more like the Federation ethics-wise while still keeping its distinctive identity.
>A timeship series taking place primarily in the 26th century or so. Deals with temporal prime directive violations, the temporal cold war and any sort of change in the timeline. Can have cameos from anyone between ENT and Picard if they fucking need it (they don't, but it could be fun).

I'm pretty hyped for the Short Treks. Way more excited for them than Discovery season 3 even though Discovery will have more 'story.' Spock is enjoyable, Pike isn't bad and Number One at least hasn't made me cringe which is rare on Discovery. Really hoping they announce a Pike series for those reasons only because it looks like a loveable setting (given the Short Treks trailer) and a comfy ship.

I've never seen TOS, but he was good in the films. The thing I notice most of all if we're comparing series, is that Sisko, Janeway and Picard all have their own unique vibe and feeling. Discovery's Tilly is the only character who hits different beats, with differing levels of success, while everyone else just gives a bland, indistinct, unconvincing performance. I can't say if this comes from the actors themselves, the writers, the directors or whoever, but it's a very obvious contrast to prior series and not a positive one.
