I found this film to be quite enjoyable. Apparently Claire Denis is a famous director whose work I have never heard of until now because all the other films are in French. I just checked this out because Pattinson has never let me down and it paid off. Any other Claire Denis films that are vital for me to check out?

Also I have no idea what the title of the film means even after watching it so I would also appreciate it if someone could explain that.

i was going to watch this a little while ago, but the anons on this board told me to not waste my time. what did you like about the film op? it’s interesting to hear a different take

I would've bought it by now if there were a 4K version available but i don't see it anywhere

>Any other Claire Denis films that are vital for me to check out?

— «CHOCOLAT».

— «BEAU TRAVAIL».

— «TROUBLE EVERY DAY».

— «BASTARDS».

>Also I have no idea what the title of the film means even after watching it so I would also appreciate it if someone could explain that.

«HIGH LIFE», IN THE SENSE OF: «LIVING HIGH UP IN KOSMIC SPACE».

Well it's a visually beautiful film and I appreciate that a lot more than most people do, probably. I found the story compelling and I just generally tend to have a fondness for sci-fi. If you're not into slow arthouse stuff it may not be for you but if you are it's definitely worth watching. Keep in mind that people on this board have a burning hatred for anything A24 so that may have colored their opinions.

Thanks for the answers to both questions, I'll definitely take a look into these.

This movie was fucking terrible.

And here they come...

It's super weird. It's very slow. Diverse cast. Ship full of degenerates. Incel protag. SF elements are there just to tell a story. Distributed by A24.
Not like any of these attributes appeal to the majority of Yea Forums. Personally, I found it mediocre.

>Incel protag
He was pretty obviously volcel.

This movie game me PTSD as a teen. For a while, I'd cringe and get all tense when my gf would try to make out with me.

>Bastards
>Beau Travail
>Trouble Every Day
>White Material
>35 Shots Of Rum (Ozu like film)
>I Can't Sleep
Her most interesting work imo is The Intruder so check that out. I guess Beau Travail is considered her best.
It's the type of film that you have to see for yourself, very divisive so you can't rely on other people's opinions.
He was monk like protagonist, not incel.

Are you French, or were you just really hipster that you were going out watching French language films as a teenager?

>really hipster
Kind of. Not French but there's this cable channel where I live that always shows weird, indie and international films and I've been watching it ever since my very early teens.
They put Buffalo 66 one day and I loved it and some time later (probably around 2003-04) they had a Valentine's Special, which had a movie with Vincent Gallo in it, so I just watched it.

Hm, that sounds like a cool channel. Closest thing I have is an Armenian channel that I saw showing Pulp Fiction the other day and it was dubbed over but for some reason you could faintly hear the English audio.

I generally like A24 stuff a lot but High Life was garbage. Atrociously bad acting (Pattinson aside), almost zero plot, and the sets are so cheap and terrible, they have to be seen to be believed. In fact, I would say this film is worth the watch because it's fascinatingly bad. It's not bad enough to be genuinely entertaining but it's a good case of how not to make a movie. So if OP hasn't seen it, he should watch it exactly once.

It was a pretty well received movie, I'm surprised to see so much hate for it on Yea Forums and Reddit. Also it only had a budget of like 8 million dollars, so it's pretty amazing when you consider that.

Well most people go into it expecting some space horror because of the trailer or Interstellar because of their retardation. So then it's not that hard to see why so many people are schocked when they get a Claire Denis film instead.

I found it to be pretty horrifying, but I guess it's not the mass market kind of horror that satisfies the average person who causes Blumhouse films to make billions of dollars.

I thought this film was genuinely beautiful and really well paced -- it was basically Interstella, but done right.

Though I'm not a fan of Denis, her other films are kinda rambly and meandering like this one, but they never really end on any concrete point. Let the Sunshine In and Bastards were excruciating watches.

I have never heard of Claire Denis therefore he is not famous.

Yes it's kind of disturbing and creepy. I guess lot of people thought it was pointless or schocking for the sake of being schocking and edgy. I disagree. I really liked the scenes with Pattinson and baby, those were beautiful. I think some exposition was quite bad and the film tried to explore too many themes and it never came together perfectly but it was still good. The scene with dogs on the ship was great.

>schocking
illiterate donkey

I'm in the mood for a good stoner flick. Thanks.

That's my phone. For some reason it had that instead of shocking.

ill watch it and get back to this thread.

I'm surprised it took someone so long to make this joke.

The doctor lady was foxy as fuck goddamn

Welcome to the works of 55 year old Juliette Binoche.

holy shit Pattinson should be the next big movie star. why isn't he being pushed, guy is excellent, young, unique/handsome/charismatic etc.

>why isn't he being pushed
He's literally the new Batman.

Battinson

Speaking of Pattinson, what do people think of Cosmopolis around here? My mother, who liked Pattinson because of Twilight and apparently some movie called Remember Me, and has not liked a single film of his since then, was telling me about how shit it was but the way she described it made it sound pretty interesting to me. It sounded like Locke, which I like, and she actually says she liked too, so I dunno if it's actually like that or not.

your mother is retarded

Okay, but what about Cosmopolis?

never seen it mate

Well maybe my mother is right then.

give your mother a kiss from me

It's a Cronenberg film. If you like Cronenberg films, you're going to like Cosmopolis.

If you don't know Cronenberg...oh boy you're in for something.

What are some good Cronenberg movies
I only saw The Fly, Dead Zone and Scanners.

Naked Lunch of course.

I think the only Cronenberg film I've seen is A History of Violence and I don't remember much about it because it was a long time ago. I've been meaning to see Eastern Promises though because Yea Forums keeps telling me it's Viggo's best movie.

I'll give her a kiss, but it won't be from you.

Beau Travail is unironically the best gay kino ever

It's a strange film with many interesting themes but it's quite cold. Still a good watch. Better than Maps to the Stars imo.
Basically everything from him is worth watching. Especially Dead Ringers and Naked Lunch.

Pretentious garbage

So's your face! AHAHAHAHAHA!

>Juliette Binoche riding a black dildo like a maniac

for what reason? I don't know.

i cant stand that faggots face. i avoid the fuck out of every movie he is in.

French people. Enough said.

Thanks OP. I'm going to watch it tonight

I'm French and I've never heard of her. Then again the vast majority of our local productions are trash so I'm assuming her work is trash too...
Regarding High Life it was incredibly surface-leve, every "nuances" about the film could be described in a single sentence.

Did you even watch the film? Everybody was sexually frustrated.

What French filmmaker would you actually recommend?

a full closeup shot of a baby vagina for an awkward 30 seconds right as the movie opens.

>what did he mean by this

Well the director is a woman.

Leos Carax

Well, I am pleasantly surprised you did not trick me into googling the name of a porn director.

Funny, my mom is the opposite. She saw the first Twilight and thought it was shit but really enjoyed Cosmopolis.

It's not very good, and I enjoy most of A24's stuff. The script is just bad. It comes off like a student film.

I liked white material, 35 shots of rum and Beau travail the best

Oh, White Material is her? I saw that in a list of the top 100 films of the 21st century. Actually, I have the list right here.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC's_100_Greatest_Films_of_the_21st_Century

I think they wanted to prove that there were actually good films made after 2000 since a lot of people are nostalgic for older stuff.

>the taboos of intimacy, and the taboo around, of course, incest. It's a taboo, but it exists."

ohhhhh. he was supposed to fuck his daughter at the end? i thought they discovered some kind of energy hole thing in deep space.

My mother likes to fastforward through movies when she's watching them alone. I don't know how she can stand to do it, I get irritated if I miss even a few seconds. I was sure she was going to like Shape of Water and she watched it in like an hour and a half. It's two hours long. I still have no idea what she could have possibly skipped that would add up to that much time. But I guess she just cannot get into anything remotely artsy. At least she had the sense to recognize that the rest of the Twilight films were no good. Also, it's kind of funny when you think about it that despite Pattinson's efforts to become this arthouse guy, the first thing anyone thinks of when they hear his name is still "The guy from Twilight?" He'll never be able to shake it. I think that may be part of why he took the Batman role, in the hopes that people will instead at least think "You mean Batman?" We'll see how it works out for him.

Philippe Garrel

Then why does it have a certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes? Your move.

Have you ever notice that incest and incel start with the same four letters? What do you make of that?

probably a desire to normalize the future sin in order to create righteous indignation in the human suffering to come. im going to live in my crawl space and survive on gutter water and crackers until the fires stop.

Watch Beau Travail and White Material

Great scene.
