The basic gist goes something like this. The liberal "elites" were only joking about hunting people in a private group chat. Somehow it leaked on social media and blew up into a huge controversy called "Manorgate".
Since it ruined their lives and reputations, the liberals decide to get revenge and kidnap people spreading the Manorgate conspiracy online and take them to an estate in Croatia to hunt them for real. The main protagonist was kidnapped by accident because she shares a name with one of their targets. The "deplorables" all get killed and Crystal pretty much offs all the elites single handedly and flies off into the sunset on their private jet.

Sounds like a fun simulacrum era version of The Most Dangerous Game

It's not a bad concept but it just seems really uninspired. From what I remember, 3 of the hunted get picked off with sniper rifles right from the get go and Lindelof is such a fucking unoriginal hack that he re-used the nerve gas canisters from Lost in another scene where 3 more die. One guy gets run down by a VW bus, another is shot in a gunfight and the protag kills one who's apparently a traitor.

It's a publicity stunt. The reality is that up until this, no one was talking about this movie and it wasn't getting any traction. When you take into account that IT 2 and Rambo (two movies that would likely attract similar audiences as The Hunt) come out shortly before this movie, Universal was probably a bit worried. Especially since September is generally a dead time for theaters. I can guarantee you'll see this come out late next October, before the election when political tension will be at an all time high. They'll market it as the movie "Conservatives didn't want you see" in an attempt to cash in on the left's insanity. Blumhouse movies are made on the extreme cheap, so it's no big loss to shelve it for a year. Especially when there's a good chance of doubling or tripling their earnings.
