The problem was they used literal video game cgi, masked it with darkness and rain, and every monster shot was zoomed in an no longer than 3 fucking seconds, they really fucking dropped the ball on the monster fights

Godzilla and Mothra have shown themselves to be benevolent but Rodan is arguably the only one who's still alive that can become a destructive little shit on a dime. Godzilla has him in check though so its ok I guess (plus he's sleeping in a volcano).
