What and when did all go so wrong?

He tried to prolong the magic.

>sayid jarrah? i haven't heard that name in a long time

Lindsay Ellis' A Long Awaited Autopsy answered this comprehensively. Watch out, though! She's a woman!

LOTR had almost 8 years of pre-production with everything being meticulously crafted

With The Hobbit, Jackson had to pick up the scraps left by Del Toro and Studio meddling and had to start filming in 16 months.

In short: It was a rushed mess.

No preparation, studio trying to shit out the trilogy as quick as possible. Plus extending a short stand alone adventure book into a trilogy as epic as LOTR was retarded.
I don't blame Jackson.

He got saddled with Guillermo Del Toro's failed project and told to crank it out double time while making one or at most two film's worth of material into three films. Also the CGI studio did a lousy job.

This pretty well sums up LOTR fans feelings to the Hobbit trilogy.

Really fucking sucked they made 3 bad movies instead of one good one. The Hobbit doesn't have enough fucking content.

That was all the studio.

When del Toro dropped out at the last minute. See It goes into depth in all the ways the Hobbit was fucked and, honestly, while you can point to where it started to go wrong so much went wrong that you can't point to any one thing. It was just a perfect shitstorm.

There was no pre-production
It needed to be a trilogy somehow
It was tonally all over the place, trying to fit a fun adventure story into epic fantasy
Nobody told Jackson to stop it with strange CGI excess

This is official DVD behind the scenes.

Let that sink in.

>Plus extending a short stand alone adventure book into a trilogy as epic as LOTR was retarded.
>I don't blame Jackson.
He's bloated everything he's touched since LotR. Why would you think he has no control over this?

I'd say they made two mediocre movies and one bad one (the third one).

I think Jackson could have made two films out of it fairly well. Basically one film traveling to the mountain and then one film dealing with Smaug and fighting the Orcs. But even then he simply needed more time to bring it together and the special effects department needed more time to make decent CG.

He became obsessed with CGI. You can see it even in LOTR.

>MGM had the rights to the Hobbit, meaning to make the two-movie adaptation they wanted to finance half of it and reap half the profits
>MGM was in the middle of bankruptcy and couldn't raise the cash, principal photography can't begin because the rights are tangled up with them
>Meanwhile Del Toro had been doing pre-production on it for close to two years without ever having an official greenlight
>has completely different feel than Jackson's, imagine the feel of the Shire scenes from LOTR but for the whole movie
>he gets tired of the delays and tells them to fuck off and goes home
>MGM finally gets their shit together and the duology is greenlit, they want to hold to the schedule despite their delays
>basically force Jackson to get over directing with no additional time for pre-production, studio threatens to bring in Brett Ratner to do it and Jackson agrees to take over
>Jackson gets partway through production when the studio says they want a trilogy, they again threaten to bring in Brett Ratner if Jackson doesn't agree
>the already over-extended and under-prepared production gets even more fucked
>Jackson goes from svelte elf back to fat dwarf only now his hair is Gandalf grey
>his high fantasy LOTR tone clashes considerably with the remaining earthy elements from Del Toro's version, making the tone go everywhere
>the movies gross $3 billion dollars
tl;dr: Brett Ratner ruined The Hobbit by proxy

>threaten to bring in Brett Ratner
As far as threats go, it's a decent one.

The Hobbit is 300~ pages long. There's barely anything for 1 movie. Meanwhile the LotR trilogy has enough content for 6 movies.

Tolkien was too good for this world. Now we're stuck with that edgy hack GRRM.

How do people like this keep getting jobs ruining things?

Money doesn't launder itself, user.

Please explain I have autism

Red Dragon was kino though, and a better adaption than Manhunter

FLAT EARTH? FLAAAAAAAAAAT EAAAAAAAAAARTH?

In all seriousness, I do think a large chunk of the flat earth brigade are making a sort of commentary similar to what Tolkien is saying in this letter.
