The film is really true to the manga and reading the manga beforehand will make you appreciate watching it so much more. One of the reasons why it has a cult following is because it's so true to the manga. Fans of alita before the movie loved the movie WAY more than people who went in blind.

It seems awkwardly unaware of itself.
Like, there is some really horrifying looking cyborgs, but it's never really made aware to the audience that these are horribly disfigured humans. Like Robocop but without the horrifying tone of what they did to his body.
And there's a very awkward romance. There's no telling how old Hugo is supposed to be. Anywhere from 16 - 25, but Alita is established to be a girl/teenager. And it's weird because Hugo and Alita form this relationship. But then it's revealed that Alita is "much older" and there's even an awkward shot where they say this and the camera looms over her breasts (which grow in size). How old is Alita? Technically, her body is hundreds of years old. Her personality with memories is that of an adults, but before her memories it's that of a child. It's just very awkward because you're not really sure what you're supposed to think of her. That is sort of her arc, growing from a naive baby, it's just awkward when a relationship is thrown into the mix.
Other than these weird choices, it's a by-the-books average action movie.

Here's what scares me. They make a sequel and it doesn't succeed, but it doesn't flop either. It doesn't make enough to justify a trilogy, but it does perform well enough that something thinks, "Hey, maybe there is some money to be made here." I would made much more fixes to this story so Hugo's death wasn't so sudden. Story should be focused on major points instead of running from bounty hunting to motorball. Maybe add a marvel-style post credits scene that present a bigger threat to overcome, but it's unnecessary, movie should have a finished story on its own. There is no need to itroduce Nova this early.

Not even good by Hollywood anime adaptions/remake standards. I don't understand /tvcucks/. This movie felt like it was made in the 90s with all of the overarching themes and cliches from that time. It felt similar to watching Player One given the way it was directed. Not even the dialogue was good. The only interesting character is Alita.
