This thread will be long gone by the time I get home tonight, but if someone makes a new one in 8 hours I will post a picture of my taped copy of Ringo Starr's Caveman (1981) that I recorded off of HBO at some point in the early 1990s.

Did Apple ruin graphic design?

yep

Marketing becoming female-focused did it, although Apple definitely played a huge role in that.

I actually can't wait until 90s nostalgia rolls around so i can experience how the boomers who lived thru the 80s feel about the current synthwave craze

I sure hope you anons used a VHS Rewinder so your VCR didn't get wear and tear from rewinding all the Blockbuster tapes.

90s nostalgia already exploded on Facebook, Buzzfeed, Twitter etc. since like 2008-2009 you retarded zoomer.

Any VHS player can rewind a tape but a rewinder is a separate thing that can rewind tapes really fast

Attached: file.png (800x445, 813K)

Photo of some of my tapes. I've been buying them at all the local Goodwills, they're 50 cents or less. Building a very comfy second living space in my basement.

VHS with all the simple shapes and gradients were pure art. CDs just didn't have the chance to develop into a format that big and ubiquitous. Last of its kind. Too bad we'll never see it coming back.

Attached: file.png (980x652, 526K)

also I ended up with this promotional copy of She's All That. It was sent to video store operators. It's got an ad for an old website where you can order tapes in bulk for rental and buy promotional items.

I would throw all the VHS covers in the trash, I have a bunch of recorded stuff but no original cases. Now that I notice they were really cool looking.

I have a copy of Shrek that is both tall and wide. I'm not sure if it was once a placeholder at a rental place, or if it's some sort of play on the size of Shrek the character.

I still have my VHS porn tapes

The white plastic covers, before the cheap cardboard covers were better. The sound when opening them was satisfying.

I have std

you should get that treated

>When you popped in a VHS and this logo came on you knew you were in for some KINO.

Attached: 01c5ca27c6[1].jpg (750x1000, 87K)

The ones I have are in these types of cases, some on white cases, and some in black cases with plastic in the outside. My uncle owed a video rental store so he would give these covers so easily to my family.

Attached: cover.jpg (1200x900, 175K)

Found a photo of various VHS cases. The Rocky and Digimon ones are the regular sized case, while Esselte, Showtime etc. are the bigger model. Didn't even remember there were other big ones.

Attached: vhs.jpg (3264x2448, 1.67M)

White plastic covers? I'm not sure if that's an age thing. Looking at my collection, basically only the kids movies have those big plastic boxes. I thought it was for added durability.

Remember peeling those number stickers that came with the VHS? I spent hours doing that as a child. So much fun. Now I F5 Yea Forums 16 hours a day and jerk off to traps. What the fuck happened?

I use these for storing hard drives

Actually the Rocky ones are slightly smaller because they don't have the tiny edge to help you open the case.

>Betamax was better.
Betamax is still widely used in the TV news industry.

my dad labeled every single tape

Attached: SDC11212.jpg (2048x1536, 1.22M)

I have tons of animes and classic simpsons episodes saved on these babies.

Is it possible to macgyver some VHS cases with your DVD box art and put in a disc holder?
Like make your DVD cases look like old VHS cases.
No one ever does this and I don't know why. I'd fuck anyone with a VHS collection loud and proud in their living room.
My tapes? Nope, I just have STYLE.

I think I still have a box like that of TDK ones in my dad's basement.

My mom used to program the VCR to record Speed Racer for me as a kid, since it was on at like three in the morning.

I actually own some movies on vinyl.

Attached: CED disk star wars 2549950652_dab513f33b.jpg (500x375, 140K)

Probably not without having to expand the image some and making it look weird. Just start buying tapes. I bought a super nice old TV off of Facebook for thirty bucks and have acquired like 300+ movies from Goodwills for practically nothing. Some I love, some I wanna see, some are curiosities. Very fun.

Got my VCR from Goodwill as well.

I've actually seen a couple like Stranger Things and some 80s movies at Target have this kind of box. They're a bit too wide though since I think the disk is wider than old VHS. Lemme see if I can find the pic on my phone.

Last bit of that intro always sounded like Rambo III ost to me.

Attached: IMG_20190410_165217.jpg (640x480, 82K)

I still got some old VHS tapes with live recordings from TV, mostly sports events and occasional movie
I just can't rid of them, too much nostalgia

I have a bunch of home movies of me as a kid on these mini tapes that slot into full-size tape adapters. The silver one is mechanical, but the one below needs a battery.

Attached: AFBFDDC0-2F5B-4BA6-B88D-7C4E8E8AD3E9.jpg (2287x3580, 2.99M)

The Jurrasic Park one is just a t-shirt. It is closer to the old thinner boxes. The Blu Ray boxes look more like bulky Disney kids ones. Though some other ones had big boxes too. I got some Japanese ones from Rightstuf that were bulky like these.

Attached: IMG_20190410_165229.jpg (640x480, 74K)

Nice

Incorrect, until film, music and gaming get in on the fad, it's not real.

The Stranger Things sets are gorgeous. Even if they weren't imitating retro VHS covers, the presentation was immaculate with a slipcover and the box design which opens like a book. It's honestly the most rad packaging I've ever seen.

I wouldn't mind cutting the box art, maybe framing them with a black insert would look sharp. The disc holder would be the tricky part.

Whoa i recognize this
Das the video which future funk and synthwave comes from!!

Oh damn. I do have some recent pics of some old vhs. A friend had just seen Mac & Me on the new MST3K. I wanted to show him how I saw it as a kid.

There's a certain allure to them

Before Spoony went insane, he did a few videos on VHS games, comfy kino.

No I love them I just didn't know this stuff was out there. Thanks for posting this.

It's just old tapes I still have and didn't get rid of. It's mostly sports, movies and porn. It's still fun to see what I recorded and check out old commercials and stuff from the 90s

I put 90s commercials on my second monitor all the time, that's super cool.

Polaroid, AGFA, Panasonic look cool

They stopped producing new VHS tape releases of movies in 2006.

Attached: 423432.jpg (1600x900, 125K)

Blank minidiscs were also pretty

Attached: file.png (400x400, 222K)

I have about 9 rows of tapes that width to get through from a deceased Gramps. But after years of DLs and streaming it takes its toll spooling through tape-after-tape

It'd be possible to make custom covers on Photoshop or some such other program and print them out, you'd just need the right quality images and such.

I've encountered minidiscs in my time but what would a consumer do with a blank one?

VHS tapes were around long after DVDs were introduced since you couldn't tape live programming with DVDs so I think I used VHS until 2005.

I'm not that old

You put mp3s on them, or uploaded albums on to them, instead of mp3 players or ipods.

forgot pic

Attached: file.png (584x329, 423K)

Before the days of ipods i used to record CD's on them. Could get 2 or 3 albums on one disc (if i remember correctly)

Sir im gonna have to ask you to turn yourself into the authorities for possessing that.

>t. guy who DL'd it from Limewire

funny enough, in Austin Powers 2, when Dr Evil shows the clip of the white house blowing up, it doesnt have the helicopter in it either.

Nah. I rented it when it first came out on VHS from a Tape rental store called "Videoland" in the mid 80's and made a copy. Obviously it was before they got pulled from the shelves because it was not yet known the Tracy Lords was under 18.

Let's go deeper...

obsoletemedia.org/obsolescence-decade/

I look at this and without looking at the labels I thnk "that one is a bunch of Babylon 5, that one is Toonami, and there's got to be a bunch of Star Trek scattered throughout."

>typing/printing labels
I never understood this. Write it haphazardly with whatever writing instrument is nearby or don't label it at all and just go by the general appearance of the thing.

Attached: smh tbh onii.gif (182x249, 81K)

my dad was a neat freak back int he 80s/90s. When EACH tape cost $20 or more, he treated it like a work of art, typing out each title onto the tape, sometimes even adding info cards or episode cards to the tapes.
As he got old he got lazier and eventually grabbed the nearest fat sharpie and whatever label was around and scribled over the old one.

Attached: SDC11217.jpg (2048x1536, 1.23M)

I cry thinking about all the time and money wasted on shit like this.

Do you think you inherited his autism?

I bought a combo VCR and DVD recorder in 2004. It could record onto both from any tv input, and from DVD to VHS and vise versa. The DVDs were never guaranteed to work on other players, some had no problem, others refused to play them.

oh yeah in the 80s it meant something but by the 90s we were all taping over old stuff

can you believe people used to get mad that you taped over their show?

I was shit at labeling as a kid just as I'm shit at taking pics

Attached: oF0bypbQ.jpg (5120x3840, 1.68M)

Had it since 92. Can't find any other duo box sets, so it's either ultra rare or a blockbuster employee was selling bootlegs.

I tried to watch a home movie of my mom on prom night and in the middle of the tape, someone had taped over it with Fresh Price.

What's the name for the little brain spasm you get when you look at something old? Not nostalgia, because it's a physical sensation and I feel it even for things I don't remember but that I recognize as having been from a different time

A stroke? Can you smell toast?

No because I dont have physical items to display and label anymore. If making sure all my movie folders on my hard drive follow the same naming standards "Movie (year)" then I guess

Attached: SDC11205.jpg (2048x1536, 1.04M)

Deja vu

I think deja vu would imply that he's seen the object previously.

Is it an eerie feeling? Because there's a thing by my house that's a reconstruction of a 19th century town, and something about the insides of the buildings make me feel like death.

they're CED discs

You bastard. God I miss childhood. Right in the feels.

Attached: file.png (600x400, 246K)

Betamax had superior video quality but had a shorter max duration. Truth be told the porn industry is who determined the winner of the format war between Betamax and VHS.

>porn chose the one with longer duration
how the fuck long could a porno get back then??

I can't really speak to tapes but porno DVD were often 4+ hours long. Porn was also the single biggest factor in Blu-ray beating out HD DVD.

what did you record on them?

>Swingers Angels with Dirty Faces

Attached: 1535793051902.jpg (509x501, 94K)

they often sold two movies on one tape. the porn movies (here) were always on blue vhs tapes, which gave porn a nickname of bluetape

oh shit good eye

If I didn't have my VHS collection in storage, I would image some of my favorites. Specifically Star Wars and Bob Hope Classics.

I can still remember recording on jerk off material from tv shows and cartoons back in the 90's and early 2000's. Sometimes our cable company would give a free HBO or Showtime free weekend and I would keep have the cassette in and ready to record while watching softcore. I must have had over 20 video cassettes stored up.

I can still remember using the lowest setting, I think LP or EP, most of the time but if something of superb jerk off material arose I would use the SP quality.

>SP porn
truly the best

How do I go back lads?

Attached: pepe-the-frog-kermit-the-frog-sticker-sadness-frog-thumb.jpg (310x310, 25K)

its so you can rewind while youre on to the next tape

Here is another random memory.

If you recorded over something, when you play the whole video back the beginning transitions seamlessly, but the end transitions to a grainy, snowy picture for a few seconds as it transitions back to the original recording.

>I know MrPibb and MelloYellow under the newer label
>I tasted all of Gen X
>never had Crystal Pepsi until last year
>didn't even know that Sprite or VitaCoco existed

i think they just phased out beta recently because they stopped producing tapes

Damn those feels. Reminds me of my late grandpa's betamax collection that I still own by the way. He used to record straight off basic cable and HBO.

I'd take a pic but I'm at work right now.

Had a BetaMAX VCR since 1978. Great machine it lasted until 2008 or so. Great picture and sound quality. But you could put what 3 hours tops on a blank tape. Plus porn went with VHS.

The last thing I recorded on VHS was the first live Ghost Hunters special with CM Punk back in '06. I still have it. I set it to record on the timer. Has the tail end of some WWE shit in the beginning. Remember when the Sci-Fi Network used to play wrestling?

They were great games.
Fun fact: as confirmed by the developers, the games take place in the year they were released but they just happen to have old cars and people dressing in old fashion just because it's cool. Some details like buildings, background music (like cars playing techno music on the radio when you drive nearby), some buildings with modern cars parked, show this.
Not many people know this and just assume the games take place in the 70's.
