prolly Love Exposure.
If we're counting animations then Spirited Away is up there as well
Love Exposure transcends cinema, and is something else entirely.

Preferring Love Exposure makes you one though
>tfw we'll never get the 6 hour long version
I'd pay a pretty shekel for a limited edition DVD or something.
I always describe this movie to others as "if you are instructed to summate all of humanity in one film that you must watch, that film would be Love Exposure". That's the one good recommendation Yea Forums has ever given me
Shoplifters was very kino. I'm always interested in movies that show the uglier side if East Asia cultures. Everything else we see is pretty and polished kpop, anime, dramas, etc. But getting to see how the poor people live and struggle to survive is always fucking good. Parasite (Korean) and Memories of Murder (Korean) both catered to this. Something like Man from Nowhere is just a shiny action movie, not actually kino about the underrepresented parts of Asian society
It was a good movie, fuck you.
Is that the Kanako movie? If so, it's good. Director's other movie Memories of Matsuko is one of my favourites.
Something from the new wave. Personally I side with Woman in the Dunes and Eros + Massacre
Someone please name them all
they're all nagisa oshima dude
My boss my hero
Not a movie, but it's still kino
All about Lily Chou Chou. I still list to the music
Sion Sono wishes he could make something as good as Kanako.

"Cure" is a good contender for a great modern Japanese movie.
