That's what you get when you have to run the movie through a consensus of people who vapidly criticise pop culture for a living.

I would honestly have watched a road movie / documentary about James, Mike and whoever going on a road trip to New Mexico to actually look for the buried cartridges. Even when they inevitably don't find them, it'd be fun.
They got the actual game designer in this piece of shit film, they could have actually interviewed him and had some laughs.
Why they decided to go full fiction when none of them know anything about acting, filmmaking or comedy writing is beyond me.

The first 100 are all in a good range but the newer videos have all the real gems like Hong Kong 97, Seaman, Crazy Bus, Big Rigs, Sonic 2006, etc... one of the early good ones is Plumbers don't wear ties which is on par with the later master pieces. I'm sure I missed some and don't take this as a rule without exceptions. Also the newer episodes have way more complete busts as well.

The ability to articulate and dissect what makes good art requires a completely different skill set from the ability to execute good art hands-on. Not even an opinion. A lot of critics realize they have an interest in art early on, assume that means they want to make art, then eventually realize they're more inclined toward articulation than execution, but the idea that critics are just subpar artists who flunked out of the field and settled elsewhere is bitter bullshit spread by artists who get butthurt over criticism. Most critics can detect this and resent artists for it, which is why most mediums have a pretentious, parasitic cabal of critics around it who hurt the medium way more than they help it.

It became the "face" of the video game crash. The game its self did not cause it, it was the industry behind it. The games at that time had 0 quality they were shat out as fast as possible with little no QA. To much product smothered the whole thing and retailers started to refuse the company's.
Atari and others pulled an ED Wood really, rapid fire games who gives a fuck about how good they are. Find one that sticks to the wall.
ET was just the last in the line for these types of games. It fucked Atari because the price of the licence needed to sell more copy's of the game than there were even Atari console owners.
Then Nintendo swooped in and gave assurance to retailers that they would "check" every game for the NES and include a seal of approval sticker.

James's movie could have been a deep look in to it with the Nerd Character as a side to keep it interesting. Hell i would have liked it if he got the people to agree to be shouted at by the Nerd. Early AVGN had energy. You can tell that it's just some early 20's dork letting out years of pent up frustration over the games he spent his childhood playing. This is what people loved. They don't love the Nerd™ character, who hangs out with celebrities, and stares glassy eyed at PS4 games saying "I guess this is bad", before he breaks into another poorly acted skit filmed in front of a green screen.

All of James output back then was brimming with energy, you can see jis enthusiasm even with smaller videos like Rocky and TMNT 3 review,now he is completely inert.

I never had much hope for the movie, I guess I'm just disappointed in James for his life decisions.

Him trying to salvage his dying channel with controversy did what you'd expect, bring those 15 mins of fame that of course wouldn't last. Just because you had Anti-SJW suddenly saying he was based everyday didn't mean the consensus ever changed.

Life of Black Tiger was such a poor decision.
The skit was bad but the game choice in particular was a huge mistep.
"Life of Black Tiger" was made fun of by everybody years ago and there's really nothing to say about it.
It's an obvious asset flip, it didn't trick anyone into buying it, the only thing of note is it somehow got promoted by Sony.

Part of the appeal of AVGN is seeing a game you could have easily played or maybe you did, that looks fine on the surface but then having James demonstrate just how poor it really is just beneath the surface.
Same with the hardware episodes, in retrospect consoles like the Jaguar and Amiga 32 look silly, as does things like the Powerglove or tthe Virtual Boy.
But at the time those were new technology, people were suckered into paying hundreds of dollars for that crap.
Just think of all the people who paid for a CDi or a 3DO...

James needs to take a step back and rethink what needs his attention for these videos, because there's no shortage of e-celebs coming out of the woodwork and doing videos on this old shit.
