Honestly, it’s not a bad thing in his given field. He’s one of the more respected filmmakers of his generation, and that’s probably because of his eccentricities, not in spite of them. People think Kubrick was autistic too. Whether or not people here care for their work, what is undeniable is that they are two of the most well known auteur filmmakers of all time. I’d gladly live life as a sperg in exchange for that level of success.

Yep, Hitchcock is easily more well-known than Kubrick and Tarantino shouldn't even enter into discussion. If people still talk about his films decades after his death then he can start to qualify. Probably even Scorsese and Coppola are more famous. Spielberg too if he counts as auteur

Honestly? Only to boomers at this point. Far more random people on the street in 2019 will have seen a Tarantino or Kubrick film (mostly Tarantino) than will have seen a Hitchcock one.
