It introduces the setting as the 13th day of the 13th month, because its a parody of Friday the 13th. Obviously there is no 13th month which is the absurd assertation but then it is revealed the thirteenth month on the calendar is called SMARCH with a picture of the school on it. The school is known for cutting costs and generally being of a low standard implying the calendar is just typo. Homer misinterprets or accepts that is Smarch this mythical month without issue which compounds the bait and switch humor.

According to the Gregorian calendar there are just 12 months, none of which are named “Smarch”, however this episode of the popular television show “The Simpsons” references this fictional 13th month. We know this to be absurd as a 13th month would imply that the Earth’s orbit around the sun has been extended, something out of the realm of foreseeable possibility. The scene in which the calendar is shown introduces the setting of this episode as the 13th day of the 13th month; this is because the episode in which the calendar appears was written to be a parody of the classic horror film Friday the 13th. Since there is no 13th month but Homer fully believes in it, an element of humor is established which is rooted in both absurdism and comedic abstraction; it is further accentuated by irony stemming from Homer’s unquestioning belief in the fabricated month as well as his on-screen appearance in what he believes is appropriate attire for the fictional month. As the plot of the episode progresses and the calendar is finally shown, the appearance of this fictional month of Smarch is inexorably linked with the incompetence and inadequacy of the Springfield High School. The school is known for fiscal irresponsibility as well as profligacy and generally substandard practices, which implies that the calendar is merely a typo. Homer’s lack of analytical prowess leads him to misinterpret or accepts that this Smarch is a mythical month thereby aggrandizing the imposturous farce.

The 13 parodied its supposed unlucky nature and overuse in horror films.
