Not like the Byzantines were any strangers to backstabbing. The reason they sacked Constantinople in the first place was because a Byzantine pretender asked them to and promised them shitloads of money for it. Then when he couldn't pay up they looted instead. Yeah that particular army were hardly holy knights, more like mercenaries. Did the crusaders go too far? Hell yeah they did, raping nuns, putting a literal whore on the Patriarchal throne in the Hagia Sophia just for shits and giggles and destroying works of art thousands of years old was hardly necessary. The only ones who didn't behave like complete animals (obviously the French contingent were the worst with the raping, drinking and pillaging) were the Venetians who saved what priceless artifacts they could.
But still, it wasn't completely unprovoked. It just got way out of hand.
